JUST IN: Cardinal Pizzaballa Stopped by Israeli Police and Denied Entry to Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem for Palm Sunday Mass

Israel's current policy is the closure of all famous holy sites such as the prayer wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Any other public gatherings are to be kept to 50 people or less. Cardinal Pizzaballa and Fr. Ielpo wanted to attend mass today at the CHurch of the Holy Sepulchre, but were denied entry by the Israeli police under the standing policy that all holy sites are closed. They sought an exemption to attend mass to stream to the world with a gathering of less than 50 and the Israeli government is considering how to permit it in this Holy week without endangering lives due to repeated missile attacks and fragments crashing within meters of the Church in past days.

An American journalist has just been kidnapped in Baghdad in what officials suspect is an operation by an Iran-backed militia — and there’s still no word on her condition as the search intensifies.

U.S. freelancer Shelly Kittleson was abducted in broad daylight on a busy street in central Baghdad on March 31, 2026, while reporting on the ground. Iraqi officials say armed men in civilian clothes seized her and sped away, and the Interior Ministry has since confirmed a foreign journalist was taken as security forces hunt for the kidnappers. One suspect and a vehicle used in the abduction have been detained, but authorities still don’t know where she is.

Kittleson is a Rome-based reporter known for her frontline coverage of Iraq, Syria, and the wider Middle East for outlets like Al‑Monitor, which has called for her “safe and immediate release.” U.S. officials and security analysts have linked the kidnapping to Kataib Hezbollah, an Iranian‑backed Shia militia designated a terrorist organization by Washington and closely tied to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). That’s why many are already describing this as an “IRGC kidnapping” carried out via a proxy group rather than Iranian operatives in uniform.

The U.S. government had repeatedly warned Kittleson about specific threats from Iran‑aligned militias in the days before she was taken, including at least one FBI contact the night before her abduction, according to U.S. officials speaking to media. On March 14, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued a stark alert urging Americans to “exit Iraq immediately” due to kidnapping risks from Iran‑aligned groups and maintains a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for the country.

The Trump Administration says it has “no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans” and is working with Iraqi authorities and the FBI to secure her release, while the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad coordinates quietly behind the scenes. This kidnapping fits a wider pattern of IRGC and proxy operations targeting journalists and dissidents abroad, which the U.S. and its allies condemned earlier this year as part of a campaign to “kill, kidnap, and harass” foreign citizens.
